1 Maya Street is one of the oldest streets in the historic New World (Novy Svet) district of Grodno; its formation began in the 1880s, and today its total length is about 500–800 meters. Throughout its history, it has borne many names: Yakovlevsky Prospekt, 3 Maja Avenue, Kirkhovaya, Yastrebinnaya, Bismarckstrasse — receiving its current name in 1940. The street is unique for its contrasting architecture: the even-numbered side has preserved two- and three-story brick and wooden houses from the late 19th — early 20th centuries (many recognized as historical and cultural heritage sites), while the odd-numbered side is primarily built up with modern buildings.
